Grandmother's Rose

Grandmother's Rose for Mother's Day

Today I have decided to share a favourite teacup that was given to me by my mother before she had alzheimers.  My mother is a grandmother to 6 children (now adults - three boys and three girls) and three great grandchildren (one boy and two girls).  Amazingly, my sister and I both had two boys and a girl. My sweet mother is 92 years of age and  she lives in a lovely senior's home called "The Madison" which is located in Coquitlam, British Columbia. I thought that this teacup would be a tribute to honour all kind and caring grandmothers like my darling, generous and always giving mother on Mother's Day, this Sunday, May the 12th.

This teacup is a Hammersley entitled "Grandmother's Rose."

The teacup has deep, dark pink roses with several shades of green leaves.  It is gold trimmed and the cup is gently footed.   The saucer has a fluted edge of gold.  The main colour is shabby roses!

I found the matching tea plate on one of my treasure hunting excursions for a deal.  Its shape is is not quite as fancy as the cup.

Do you see the raised embossed lines on the saucer?

This Mother's Day will be extremely difficult for my husband and all of our family  and myself because his mother passed away in October, 2012 and we have always visited her and taken her gifts of Purdy's chocolates  and Danish Sherry to show her our love every Mother's Day as long as I can remember!  She is dearly missed!
My mother attended First Presbyterian Church in New Westminster, British Columbia (like her mother before her) until her home became the Senior's Home.  She sang in the church choir from an early age and has been an inspiration to our family.  Every Christmas we would stand around our piano and she would sing "Oh Holy Night".  She loves to tell us how she wanted to be an Opera Singer and I do believe with her powerful voice that she should have pursued her dreams. Although she is now confused, my mother is such a very happy person still and quite mobile! She thanks God daily for her many blessings!

When my sister and I were forced with the difficult decision of having her leave her home, there were many treasures that had to be shared.  This is one of her beautiful tiered cake plates.

I have added Mother's bought cookies and mini pecan treats but my mother's baking is really missing from that cake plate.  She used to bake overnight cookies, coconut raspberry tarts, brownies and pies and soooo much more.  When I retire, I hope to find her recipe book and feature some of her delicious baking.

Happy Mother's Day and Grandmother's Day to all!

Thank you for having tea at the castle.

  2. Such a dear post about your sweet mother. Her rosey tea china is beautiful. What a lovely pattern! The roses are truly beautiful. I love the shape of the cup as well. And the mossy green around the roses along with the turquoise of the leaves really make the colors stunning in this design along with the beautiful red roses. The extra pieces are fabulous. I so amazed you found a matching plate! I have not had the pleasure of finding a matching piece of china.
Thank you for sharing your lovely mother with us, and her china.
I wish you and her the very best.
    Hugs,
    Terri

  3. Beautiful post. My hubbys Mother passed away a year ago in April, and we do sorely miss her as well. She was the glue that held the family together.

  5. Aw, sweet, brave Karen. That's a beautiful and heartfelt post. What a lovely friend I found in you. Hugs to you this mother's day and I truly hope you find the recipe book. I have my grandmother's Czech book and thank goodness my Czech is still good enough to read it. Last year I translated some of her best recipes for my daughter, Kerstin, as a prezzy. She was so happy she almost cried. Family history and traditions are so important to me, and obviously to you too. That's the way it should be. :)

I think we will be good friends too! I am very impressed that you can speak/read Czech. I am very busy teaching kindergarten and am anxious to retire this June when I will have more time and energy to learn more about blogging and photography and do more baking. Thank you for commenting!
I hope you have a lovely Mother's Day with Kerstin and your family.

  10. Hi Karen,
What a beautiful tribute to your mother! I love your precious teacup and matching plate you found. The cake plate is lovely too.
My son and his wife used to live in Coquitlam and we visited them once while they lived there. My son was still in the ministry at that time. They now live in Surrey and are planning to move back to the Island as soon as they get their affairs in order. I can't wait to have them back. They have a little boy and the only girl {17 mos. old} in the family so I'm quite anxious to have them here!
You have shared a precious post and thank you for sharing it with us here at Tea Time. Have a lovely week and Happy Mother's day!

    Blessings,
    Sandi

    1. Hi Sandi,
I am sure that you miss your son and your little grandchildren. Children are sooo precious! I do love babies! I am a kindergarten teacher and have no grandchildren yet. I am teaching full-time with 5 year olds so I am exhausted. I plan to retire this year and will have more time to reply to lovely comments like yours and spend some time relaxing with a cup of tea and my teacups. I hope that your son is able to find a church close to your home. Thank you for your kind comments!
      Take care,
      Karen
